What locks and latches do I need for mortice knobs?

When you choose mortice knobs there are two important factors to consider. These are that mortice knobs are more difficult to turn than lever handles and that they need to be set further into the door than lever handles.

Most of our metal mortice knobs are sprung, therefore it is better to choose a lightly sprung lock or latch so that it is not too difficult to turn the knobs. This is more important if you have young children or frail elderly people trying to open the doors.

With our porcelain knobs and the JV68PC, these handles are unsprung so the archirectural locks and latches are recommended as these are double sprung locks. This will ensure that the knob returns or springs back to its original position when releasing it.

The second important issue is to postion the knobs further into the door so that you do not bang you knuckles when closing the door. This is a very common mistake. To avoid this you ideally require 100mm locks and latches. These are readily available in tubular latches on the website. For mortice sash locks and bathroom locks these can be specially ordered and take 7-10 days. To order these please call the sales line.

Depending on the diametre of the mortice knobs you may be able to use the 76mm locks and latches. Also on some glazed doors which may only have a frame of 100mm, 76mm locks would have to be used.

Please call us for help and guidance on any of the points mention above.
